Media vilified biofuels during last year’s food crisis, conveniently ignoring problems associated with the meat industry: In 1900 just over 10% of the total grain grown worldwide was fed to animals; by 1950 this figure had risen to over 20%; by the late 1990s it stood at around 45%. Today, over 60% of US grain is fed to animals.
Also worth noting in relation to the food crises: Rising demand for meat in traditionally vegetarian societies like China and India has also fueled the food shortages.
A great resource on this issue can be found at Canadian Biofuels.
